What is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is a medication originally developed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) due to its vasodilatory properties. In its oral form, it has gained popularity for off-label use in promoting hair growth, particularly for individuals experiencing androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness). Each tablet available in our online store contains 5mg of high-quality Minoxidil, formulated for consistent dosing and effective results.

What is Minoxidil Used For?

Oral Minoxidil works by widening blood vessels, which improves blood flow to various tissues, including hair follicles. This enhanced circulation is believed to stimulate hair growth by revitalizing dormant follicles and prolonging the growth (anagen) phase of the hair cycle. While traditionally used in topical form for hair loss, the oral version offers systemic effects, making it a convenient option for those seeking broader coverage or who find topical applications cumbersome. It’s often used by individuals looking to combat hair thinning or regrow hair in areas affected by hormonal or genetic factors.

What Does Minoxidil Do?

Stimulates Hair Growth: Increases blood flow to hair follicles, potentially reviving inactive follicles and promoting thicker, fuller hair over time.
Extends Hair Growth Cycle: Encourages follicles to remain in the active growth phase longer, reducing shedding and supporting sustained hair density.
Improves Scalp Health: Enhanced circulation may nourish the scalp, creating a better environment for hair regrowth.

Why Do Testosterone and AAS Users Take Minoxidil?

Individuals using testosterone or other anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) may experience accelerated hair loss as a side effect, particularly if they are genetically predisposed to androgenetic alopecia. Elevated levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a byproduct of testosterone, can shrink hair follicles and lead to thinning or baldness. Minoxidil is often used by these individuals to:

Counteract hair loss triggered by AAS use, especially with compounds that increase DHT levels or androgenic activity.
Maintain or regrow hair in areas affected by hormonal changes during or after cycles.
Support overall aesthetic goals, as hair loss can impact confidence alongside physique improvements from steroid use.

Dosing Information:

Dosage for oral Minoxidil should be approached with care, as it is a systemic medication with effects beyond just hair growth. Common guidelines for hair loss treatment (off-label use) include:

Standard Dose: 2.5mg to 5mg once daily for hair growth purposes. Many start with 2.5mg (half a 5mg tablet) to assess tolerance before increasing to 5mg if necessary.
Administration: Take orally with or without food, at the same time each day for consistency. Splitting tablets may be required for lower doses.
Cycle Users: AAS users often maintain a consistent dose during and after cycles to address ongoing hair loss risks, adjusting based on personal response.
It’s important to note that doses for hair loss are typically much lower than those used for hypertension (which can go up to 40mg or more daily). Starting low and monitoring response is key to minimizing side effects.

Time to Work:

Oral Minoxidil generally takes several months to show visible results for hair growth. Initial effects, such as reduced hair shedding, may be noticeable within 6-8 weeks of consistent use. Significant regrowth or thickening of hair often becomes apparent after 3-6 months, with continued improvement possible up to a year or more. Results vary based on individual factors like the extent of hair loss, genetics, and adherence to dosing. Users should be patient, as hair growth is a gradual process, and discontinuation of the medication can lead to the reversal of gains over time.

Side Effects:

While oral Minoxidil is effective for many in promoting hair growth, its systemic nature means it can cause side effects, especially at higher doses or if not used appropriately:

Fluid Retention: Can lead to swelling in the hands, feet, or ankles due to its effects on blood vessels and blood pressure.
Low Blood Pressure: May cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, particularly when standing up quickly, as it was originally a antihypertensive drug.
Increased Heart Rate: Some users report palpitations or a faster heartbeat due to its vasodilatory effects.
Headaches: A common issue linked to changes in blood flow and pressure.
Unwanted Hair Growth: Since it’s systemic, hair growth can occur in unintended areas like the face or body, especially at higher doses.
Fatigue: Some users feel tired or sluggish, potentially due to lowered blood pressure.
Rare Severe Effects: In very rare cases, excessive dosing can lead to more serious cardiovascular strain or other systemic issues.

To minimize risks, start with a lower dose and monitor how your body responds. Those with pre-existing heart conditions, low blood pressure, or other health concerns should be particularly cautious. Consistent use at an appropriate dose is necessary to balance benefits and potential drawbacks.
